Thomas Jefferson Memorial foundation records (personally researched by Thelma F. Prince in June 1981, also by a genealogical records researcher and by Russell B. Sorrells, descendant) show that a RICHARD SORRELS began to work for THOMAS JEFFERSON 28 August 1769, and he worked more or less continously for him at Monticello until the last reference to him is made on 10 February 1774 when a sale of his estate was held. Therefore he died before this date. Jefferson kept detailed accounts on all his workers, crops planted, etc. In Richard's account, several references are made to WILLIAM SORRELLS.   William was never called a "boy" in these records. He counted out corn in one of his duties, which was an adult activity. I have received permission from Princeton University Press to use the information about Richard Sorrels in it's entirety. These records are given in full in the book: Jefferson's Memorandum Books, Vol I and II, Accounts with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767-1826. Edited by James A. Bear, Jr. and Lucia Stanton. Princeton University Press, 1997. Please see this URL for the excerpts in their entirety which refer to Richard Sorrells made by this compiler in 1997 from the aforementioned book:  http://www.oursouthernancestors.com/jeff-001.html

MONTICELLO COMMUNITY GATHERING 2007

On July 13-15th 2007, a group of Sorrells descendants of this Richard Sorrells who worked at Monticello 1769-1774 went to Monticello Community Gathering in Charlottesville to see and learn more about the place where Richard worked and lived.  Here are the comments of Kathy Sorrels Nauman, a Richard Sorrells descendant, who attended this gathering:

It was a wonderful experience ! We really didn't find out anything new about Richard Sorrels, but we spent a few hours at the University of Virginia special collections library and read all the references to Richard in Jefferson's farm accounts. We had read bits and pieces in other people's writings, so it was great to read them all ourselves. We had them copied and received in the mail this week.

“Friday night we had a wine and cheese reception in Pavillion 8's garden at the University of Va. We met all the Sorrrels clan, Russell and his wife, Jim & his wife and son Mark, a Bill Sorrells from Texas, my brother, and my two sisters. We met a lot of descendants from Sally Hemings and two other enslaved servants of Jefferson. There were descendants of several workmen  a millwright, and the man whose ancestor planted the vineyards at Monticello.

“On Saturday we had a few talks about life at Monticello and then some of us took a tour of Monticello. That night, after the public visitors all left, we went en mass to Monticello and the curator said "Welcome to Monticello! Act as if this is your home."  We had free access to all three floors of the house and we could take pictures in the house which the public normally is not allowed to do. There was a big white tent out on the back lawn and another reception for us. We took group pictures on the back steps. The weather was excellent and the view was just breath-taking.

“On Sunday we had an eight o'clock service under a big white tent at Tufton Farm, another Jefferson farm near Monticello. It was led by an Episcopalian priest and a black minister. Then we had a very nice brunch on the grounds.  Being an imaginative person, I could just see our ancestor walking across the fields or putting up one of the rail fences at Tufton Farm. I felt very much at home at Monticello, too.”

Here are the comments of Russell Sorrells, a descendant of Richard Sorrells:  Yes, there were 12 Sorrells there: myself, James Sorrells of Waco and son Mark, Bill and Bob Sorrells with wives etc. The Randolphs only had at most twenty people. It was very interesting and fun. The Hemmings family were very nice and had a good sense of humor.  The speakers were all very good. The records on Richard are in the "Jefferson Memorandum Books" which can be bought used on Amazon.com for $49. Richard's records are not in the Farm Book. I think there are 2 vols.  One of the authorities on Mr. Jefferson said the term "...a boy of his" means a slave of Richard's and not a son with 99 % certainty.

“Chip Dawson and I found the old Dawson homeplace and the cemetery where John Sorrell is supposed to be buried.  I'm going to write the Nelson Historical Society and see if they have a record of the markers. I poked around with a steel rod to about a foot deep in about 20 locations but did not find any markers.  There are no markers although a Dawson History said they were there in the fifties. The entire cemetery (about 12 sunken graves) was completely covered with periwinkle. I bought some home and planted it. Go south on US 29, turn left on Rt. 6. Go about a mile or less and turn right through a brick driveway entrance. About 200 yards back is an old white frame house (apparently a log house used to be behind it). Go around the house and back about 100 yards to an old shed. The cemetery is behind and on the right side of the shed. Don't recall which Dawson history, there are several. I went to the Albemarle Historical Society and inquired about cemetery records. There are no cemeteries on the land where I think Richard was living, but the Interstate goes right through it.

Russell sent the pictures below of the descendants gathering at Monticello.  On the right are the Sorrells group.

+2.    JOHNSORRELLS (Richard1), b. ca 1730;  m. CHRISTIAN ____ and left a loose will in Rutherford Co. NC, dated 20 April 1813.  No probate date was found, and the will is not in the will books.  See the Chalkley records for mention of John Sorrells above.  This family is also found on the web page of Molly Brown at this address: http://www.geocities.com/itsmollyb/Christian died after 1813, probably in Rutherford Co. NC

Will:  20 April 1813.  Farmer, being weak of body but sound of mind. First, he wishes decent Christian burial. Lawful debts and funeral charges to be paid out of my estate. To my beloved wife CHRISTIAN all my lands and moveable estate to be disposed of as she chooses, but she is to pay my sons and daughters, viz my sons JOHN and WALTER, NANCY, REBECKAH,, CHRISTIAN, SUSANNAH, CATHERINE, and MARGARET, five shillings each out of the above estate. Executors, WALTER SORRELS, CHARLES HILL. John signed the will in his own handwriting. Witness J. Gilkey, John Bates. This is a loose paper, not in will books.

JOHN SORRELLS was one of sixty names on "A List of Titheables and No. of Each Family in Capt. Jas. McFaden Company.  This is the only scrap of Tryon County, N.C. tax list known to exist, probable date between December 23, 1776 and July 1779.  Rutherford County was formed from Tryon County in 1779.   The persons enumerated on this list lived in the border area between present Polk and Rutherford Counties. Their homes lay along Broad River and its tributaries from the area of Dennard's Ford northward to Cove Creek. The majority lived along the Broad River and Mountain Creek in present day Rutherford County.    John Sorrels received 200 acre grants of land in Reedy Branch of Mountain Creek and on Mountain Creek in 1782.

John and John, Jr Sorrells are to be found in the county court minutes. Rutherford court minute abstracts
mention John and John Sorrells, Jr. [Hedy Hughes Newton, comp. & ed. Rutherford County, North Carolina
Abstracts of Minutes, Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions 1779-1786.)

In 1782, Capt. Watson's Company, Rutherford County tax list: John Sorrils, 250 acs. land, 4 horses, 7 cattle, assessment 7 pounds [Sue Hill Koon. 1790 Rutherford County, North Carolina Census and 1782Rutherford County Tax List. Old Tyron County Genealogical Society].  1790 Rutherford County census shows Sam Norril (sic), 7th Company, 12500; Jno. Sorrils, 11600, 8th Company; Jno. Sorrils, Jr., 11300, 8th Company. John, Sr. and John, Jr. are listed next to each other.

Rutherford County deed and will abstracts mention John, Walter, and James Sorrells. Revolutionary vouchers and accounts for a Walter Sorrells, Samuel Sorrells, and a John Sorrells show that all were issued vouchers in Morgan District of which Rutherford and Burke Counties were a part at the time. In three cases, they were issued consecutively and at the same times. This seems too much to be coincidence.  Most of the Sorrells records from North Carolina in the war are given here: http://www.oursouthernancestors.com/sorr-001.html#Accounts

John Sorrells, Sr., Rutherford Co. NC lived on the main Broad river at Mountain Creek for which he was granted a patent for 200 acs on 28 October 1782, and which he sold to William Hill for 72 pds on 9 January 1786. The land was described as on Mountain Creek of Main Broad River below Major Hampton's land. Bk E-10:546

Rutherford County Co. NC Deed Bk A#1, P.407-408.  Grant to James Holland, 200acs on Mountain Creek of Main Broad River, adjacent John Sarrels.  13 Oct. 1783.  Wit: Alex Martin.  (Deed Abstracts of Tyron, Lincoln, & Rutherford Counties, NC, 1769-1786.  Tyron County  Wills & Estates, Brent Holcomb. 1977.)

John Sorrills received 120 acs land in Rutherford County, entry dated 26 January 1788, entry no. 566, grant no. 7251, issued 28 November 1792, location on Shoal Branch of Cathey's Creek. Book 79, p. 419.

John Sorrells, Junior, (says Junior on the record) received 23 acs land in Rutherford Co., entry dated 20 March 1799, warrant dated 2 July 1799, entry no. 1556, grant no,?2660, issued 18 December 1800, location on both sides of Cathey's Creek. Book 112, p. 205. On a scrap piece of paper photocopied are the names Walter Sorrells, Major F. Alexander.

John and John Sorrells, Jr. are listed on the 1790-1800 Rutherford County censuses. John Sr. is on the 1810 Rutherford Co. NC census; he died in 1813, leaving a will in Rutherford Co. John Sorrells, Jr. is the John Sorrells on the 1820-1840 Butler County, Ky. censuses.

Ga. after  April 22, 1800.  He married MILDRED SNEAD, b. ca. 1746, Va. and lived to an old age; she probably died in Madison Co. or Walton Co. Ga.  No records of her death were found.  He was a Revolutionary Soldier from Surry Co. NC. He is a proven son of Richard and Mary Sorrells.  For details on his family, go to http://www.oursouthernancestors.com/tfcp-001.html

Concerning proof of the  parentage of Richard Sorrells (1744-1801) who married Mildred Snead (subject of this web site and the progentitor of our line, we have found the following .   In 1997, the wife of a descendant (Russ Shriver) of Richard Sorrells and Mildred Snead, named  Cindy Shrider found a book in the Stauton, Augusta County,  Virginia library entitled Albemarle County, Virginia Court Papers 1744-1783, abstracted and compiled by Benjamin B. Weisiger III. From pg. 33, it says:

1772, Folder #1---  12 Aug. 1772.  David Nowlin sells for 20 pounds, 3 cows to John Henderson, Jr that Nowlin purchased of William Towel, also all goods, etc. on plantation.  Witnesses: RICHARD SURLES, JR., and Wm Thomason.

Further down the same page of book, it gives this record:  22 March 1772.  John Henderson, Jr. complains before me, William Harris, one of His majesty's Justices for Albemarle County, that David Nowlin, late of said county, is in debt to him and removed himself from the county.  An order is given to attach his estate.  Execution carried out on livestock and other items.   RICHARD SORRELLS, JR. and SOLOMAN NELSON noted as garnishees.
These records place Richard Sorrells, Jr. in Albemarle Co. Va. in 1772!  Another record below in 1774.

Albemarle Co. Va. Will Bk 2, p. 316.  JOSEPH HUCKSTEP will, dated July 1, 1774.  Teste: RICHARD SURLES, JAMES HILL,  and SARAH MAISLEY.  Executors HENRY MULLINS, WALTER MAISLEY, THOMAS GARTH. At court August 1774  (This would have be the younger Richard, because "old" Richard had died. )

+7.    MARGARETSORRELLS m. NATHANIEL GILBERT.  See the two deeds under Richard Sorrells, Sr. where she is referenced.  I don't have any other information on her.

+8.     WILLIAMSORRELLS (Richard1), bought land in Albemarle Co. Va. in 1773, so it is known he was born prior to 1752, Va.  He worked with his father Richard at Monticello from 1769-1774.  He appeared in the Surry Co. NC tax list with brother Richard in 1782.  It is not known if he was married or where or when he died.  If he does have a male Sorrells descendant, we need him to take the Sorrells DNA test.

Albemarle Co. Deed Bk 6, p. 107-108.   8 April 1773. SOLOMAN NELSON sells to WM SORRELL, land in Albemarle Co. in the cove of one of the Ragged Mountains for 30 pds Va. money. (Question, who is this Benjamin Snead?) Surry County Deed Books A, B, C, (1770-1788) Mrs. W.O. Asher, G.R.S. Southern Historical Press, 1981.
