Deed Book 35: p.452   Ogden & Jenny Cockeroft  of Edgefield District SC to daughter Mary Cockeroft,
Deed of Gift, 4 December 1818, love, Negro girl Creese and heirs of her body, sd girl to remain property of Ogden and Jennie Cockeroft until their death.
Wit: Thomas Cockeroft, Susanah Cockeroft s/ Ogden Cockeroft,
[Swore they saw Ogden and Jane Cockeroft sign this                     s/Jaen (her -I- mark) Cockeroft.  deed.]

Proven 2 March 1819 by Thomas Cockeroft, Lewis Holmes,JQ  Rec 2d March 1819

Compare the above deed with this one from page one of my compilation: Deed Book 13: pp. 127-128.  1 July 1796.   JOHN STILL and GEAN STILL, his wife, Edgefield,  sell to BENJAMIN EDDINS 555 acres,  agreeable to a resurvey made by William Coursey.  The land being a part of 500 acres granted Richard Buckelew, dec'd, and descended to George Buckelew and conveyed by George to James Buckalew and from James Buckelew to JOHN STILL, all by grant and release.  Also the land is part of a 1500 acres granted to Hugh Rose, lying on Little Stephens Creek (no neighbors mentioned).    Wit: James Eddins, James Blocker.  Signed JOHN (-I-) STILL, GEAN (-I-) STILL. [ Both signed with the same mark -I-.   This lets us know this is John Still, Sr. and wife.]

Comments: the first deed above is the proof that Jane Jolly Still, first wife of John Still, married Ogden Cockeroft after John Still died.  Evidently,  Jenny, and Jaen, Gean, are all phonetic spellings of Jane or Janey.    She used the same mark in both deeds.  Thank you, Joan Berry, for finding the deed of gift from Ogden and Jenny/Jaen above.

The John Cogburn Family comes from a manuscript in the D.A. Tompkins Memorial Library, Edgefield, S.C.  and from the Leonardo Andrea file.  All of these Cogburns who joined the Rocky Creek Baptist Church did so by letter on 1 February and 2 February 1834.  The manuscript is about 111 pages long, and I don't know who compiled the family records.  The manuscript may be ordered from the library at Box 468, Edgefield , S.C.  I do not have the manuscript.  Written by Thelma F. Prince on March 10, 1996.

7.   JAMES JOLLY2 STILL (JOHN1) was born Abt. 1784 in S.C., and died November 15, 1849 in Edgefield Co. S.C.  He married ISABELLA BEAN, b. 1786, daughter of ALEXANDER BEAN and CHRISTIANA MASSEY.

James Jolly Still is buried in the Bean-Still Cemetery in Edgefield Co. S.C.  His tombstone is marked with the deathdate, 15 Nov. 1849, "age 63 years".  His wife, Isabella's tombstone is marked with her deathdate, 1 April 1872, "age 86 years".  Because James Jolly witnessed a deed in late 1805 (see above under David Still). I believe he had to be born by 1784 to be of age to witness, and the tombstone age of 63 years may be wrong.

Edgefield Co. Deed Bk CC:Book 28:78.  21 March 1806.  William Martin to Jolly Still 270a, on Underwood’s Branch of Mine Creek of Saluda River adjacent lands of Isaac Bush, Benjamin Still, William Rotten, Ogden  Cockeroft and Adam Stalnaker , originally granted to said William Martin 06 February 1804;  witnessed by Benjamin Still, David Still.  Signed William Martin, Mary Martin.  Proved 15 April 1806 by David Still.  Alexander Bean JP; recorded 25 March 1807.  [Would like to know who this William Martin is.]

Some of my information comes from Winard King, Jolly's descendant, and from a writing by a descendant in March 1917 called Partial History of the Bean Family which Mr. King sent me.    I have also culled information from Mr. King's correspondence to me in 1985 and first part of 1986.  He died soon after 25 February 1986, date of his last letter to me.  He was a very good researcher and very enthusiastic about genealogy.
