2. CHARLES 2 SORRELLS (Richard), the second son of Mildred Snead and Richard Sorrells was born December 1776, Virginia, according to old letters written by his son, John Benjamin Sorrells. His exact birthdate is given as 10 December 1776, Virginia, and deathdate as 12 July 1854, Walton County, Georgia, by Mabel Yoakum Holliday Moody in her old letters .
Charles Sorrells married (1) ELIZABETH JONES, daughter of Russell Jones, a Revolutionary soldier who was born ca. 1745, Albemarle County, Virginia, and his first wife, Anne Beasley. Anne was born ca. 1753, Orange County, Virginia, and died ca. 1808, Franklin County, Georgia.
The Russell Jones family came to Georgia from Wilkes County, NC. In the early 1790's. In 1780, the General Assembly of North Carolina divided the state into fiscal districts; each district was presided over by a Board of Auditors to hear all claims for public service, to fix prices for various supplies and services, and to issue, in payment of just claims, indented certificates (vouchers) signed by two of the auditors and countersigned by their Secretary. Russell Jones was one of the auditors for the counties of Burke, Lincoln, Wilkes, and Rutherford Counties, Morgan District after 1782.
A marriage contract was signed 29 April 1809, Franklin County, Georgia, between Russell Jones and POLLEY KEES, his intended wife. Was she the same person as Sarah, Russell's wife, named in the will? Jones descendants say that Anne Beasley was the mother of all of Russell's children. There were no issue from his second marriage.
RUSSELL JONES left a will, written 21 December 1827, and probated 3 March 1828, Franklin County, Georgia [Ga. Archives Franklin Co. Loose Estate Papers, RG159-2-1, Bx 5, Folder 160, Location 1750-05]. It names wife, SARAH; sons-in-law, CHARLES SORRELLS, ALLEN DANIEL, and BENJAMIN CLEVELAND; daughters, AMELIA ALLEN, deceased, POLLY DANIEL; granddaughter, NANCY HOOPER; sons, RUSSELL, DUDLEY, deceased, LEWIS, THOMAS, JAMES, and WILLIAM; children of daughter, POLLY DANIEL, except WILLIAM DANIEL, deduction from Oliver Powell's share; wife and son, RUSSELL, excrs. Wits. Gray Allen, Hugh A. Thompson, and Russell T. Jones.
Charles Sorrells probably married ELIZABETH JONES in Georgia, but the marriage record has not been found. Most Georgia counties did not keep marriage records that early. Richard W. Sorrells, the first known child, was born 2 January 1802, Georgia.
After Elizabeth died, Charles married (2) SARAH RHODES, 11 January 1829, Madison County, ceremony performed by Dozer Thornton, M.G. [I.G.I. Salt Lake City, UT.] Sarah Sorrells is listed as age 44 in 1850 Walton census, and as head of household in 1860 Walton census, born ca. 1805-06, Georgia. It is believed she was the Sary Sorrells listed on the Sorrells Spring Baptist Church rosters, Walton County. She died by 20 July 1876 in Walton County, according to loose papers found.
Sarah Rhodes (Rhoads) was the daughter of MARY T. _____ and JAMES RHOADS. James's will, dated 18 May 1854, and recorded 7 November 1855, Clarke County, Ga. names his wife, MARY T; children: JOHN RHOADS, EARLY W. RHOADS, WESLEY RHOADS, JAMES M. RHOADS, LINDSEY C. RHOADS, SARAH RHOADS SORRELLS, wife of CHARLES SORRELLS, RUTHA RHOADS BRADBURY, wife of SPENCER BRADBURY, LAVANIA RHOADS THIRELKELD, wife of THOMAS D. THIRELKELD. Exr. DR. HENRY H. GOODMAN. Wits: Robert H. Goodman, Charles S. Newton, Everett Yerby. [Film #848575, Salt Lake City. Ga. Gen. Rec. Com. DAR 1952, Wills, Family Bible Records, Clarke Co. Ga., p. 237]. Rhoads record researched by Rosa Belle A. Wilson.
Charles Sorrells was listed on an early undated Elbert County, Georgia tax list with his father, Richard, and brother, William; bought land in Elbert County in 1803; had headright grant in Elbert County in 1810; on 1813-1827 Madison County tax lists; 1820 Madison County census; on 1830-50 Walton County censuses; and 1831 and 1834 Walton County tax lists. His will was written 10 March 1849; codicil, 1 February 1854; probated 7 August 1854, Walton County.
Georgia Archives indexes in the Central Research room show Charles Sorrells as Justice of the Peace, Elbert County, 26 March 1803; Justice of the Inferior Court, Madison County, 14 December 1811-2, November 1813; House of Representatives, Madison County, 1813-14; Senate,1816, Madison County. He was a Lt. Col. in Elbert County, 20 May 1808 [M.R. 1808-1829 p. 11].
Charles was one of the five Justices of the Inferior Court selected by a resolution in the House of Representatives for the new county of Madison, created 5 December 1811. Also serving were William Fergus, Edward Ware, Sr., Isaac Strickland, and James Sanders, Jr. This James Sanders was the son of Sarah Tully and James Sanders.
In 1823, the Madison County Academy at Danielsville was incorporated with Charles Sorrells, William Sanders, Edward Ware, Sr., James Long, and Willis Towns as trustees. William Sanders was the son of Sarah Tully and James Sanders. Charles was foreman of the Grand Jury in 1826 in Madison County.
It is thought that Charles is buried on his old Plantation in the 3rd District, Walton County. It is known that his wife, Sarah Rhodes Sorrells lived on Lot #56, 3rd District [loose papers]. It appears the Sorrells Spring Baptist Church sits on part of this lot (see will of Charles]. There is an old white house very near the church today, and it is said to have belonged to the Charles Sorrells branch of the family . It is not definitely known to whom it belonged, but it is suspected it was the house that Sarah Rhodes Sorrells lived in at the time of her death. The house was lived in by someone until recent years, but is in a state of disrepair now.
Although Charles is not shown on the existing rosters of Sorrells Spring Church (at least, those which have been microfilmed), his will shows he donated part of Lot #56 to it. Some of his grandchildren and children are listed on the extant rosters, available on microfilm at Georgia Archives.
Records for Charles Sorrells, son of Richard and Mildred Snead Sorrells, and his family members are found in Georgia Archives. Many references to Charles are also found in the compilation of his father, Richard, and his brother, William Alexander Sorrells.

The Adair family was in Georgia early, exact dates unknown. Whitmill H. Adair is listed on the 1820 and 1830 Madison County censuses. By 1837 he had removed to Paulding County. Adair was a Justice of the Peace in Madison county for a number of years and in the House of Representatives from Madison County in 1829. 1831, 1833, 1834, and 1835. He is listed in the 1832 Gold Lottery of Georgia (contact Surveyor General Dept. Georgia Archives for further data). The 1838 state Paulding County Census lists W.H. Adair, 11 white persons and M.S. Adair, 5 white persons, and William Adair, 10 white persons.
In Paulding County, the Whitmill H. Adair family and the William A. Adair family were among the original settlers. "Whitmael' was listed as a state senator in 1837, and William was a Justice of the Peace on 25 January 1845. Sally Adair joined the Pumpkinvine Baptist Church by experience in 1848. The church was created 30 April 1843, under the name of Moriah Baptist Church, but no list of the first members has survived., John B. Adair was the first clerk, resigning in 1848 and William Adair succeeded him [ History of Paulding county, L.E. Roberts].
Heads of families in 1840 Paulding County were W.T. Adair, W.S. Adair, and A.S Adair, all in militia district 841; James Adair in Militia District 950. Perhaps W.H. Adair was there; the compiler does not know. W.H. Adair was Assistant Marshall in 1860, Paulding Co.
The compiler was assisted in the compilation of this family by Beverly Nelms of Fort Worth, Texas. Her husband descends from Bozeman Adair.
