22. RUSSELL BEASLEY 3 SORRELLS (Charles 2, Richard ) was born 3 June 1814, Madison County, Georgia; died 19 March 1907, Cobb County, Georgia. He married ROSANNA C. LINDLEY (b. 25 Jan. 1819, Ga; d. 5 July 1906, Cobb Co.), on 7 November 1833, Walton County [Bk C:55]. Original marriage license is in the loose papers, Georgia Archives. They are buried with marked tombstones in MacLand Cemetery, Cobb County.
Rosanna C. Lindley was the daughter of Mary Blair and James Lindley of Walton County. Russell B. Sorrells was a farmer, teacher, and of the Methodist denomination. He is on the 1840 and 1850 Cobb County censuses, and on the 1851 Cobb County tax list with one slave and 125 acres land in Oregon, 1017th Dist. Descendants say he came to Cobb County from Walton County in 1837 and settled near Lost Mountain close to Powder Springs, Ga.
The children of Rosanna and Russell B. Sorrells are listed in an old Blair Bible, copied and published in Historic Georgia Families: pp. 202-203, Lewis Wiley Rigsby. The Bible was owned at that time, 1928 , by Elizabeth A. Sorrells McKown (167), daughter of Rosanna C. Lindley and Russell Beasley Sorrells.
Mr. Rigsby asked her the following questions when he interviewed her [p. 207]: "Please give all the information possible about the Sorrells family. What was the name of the ancestor who was in the Revolution? Give all the facts as you have heard them." She answered, "My great-grandfather, whose name I can't recall, served in the Revolution under the command of General Dan Morgan and was wounded in the Battle of the Cowpens." This question was asked because of the tradition among the older members of the family that her Sorrells and Blairs were companions in service during the Revolution (Mr. Rigsby's statement).
This family and descendants has been compiled from censuses, tombstones, marriage records, family records, and Bible records. Descendants who supplied data for this family are: JAMES EDWARD SORRELLS, DONNIE JACK SORRELLS, RUSSELL BAZEMORE SORRELLS, and HARRIET CAMPBELL, descendants of Russell Beasley Sorrells.

James was the son of John Austin and his first wife, according to Donald Clarke, Lithonia, Ga., who has done in depth research on the Austin family. James was a brother to Edy Austin, who was the mother of Lucy Ann Haynes Sorrells (7). Mary Sorrells Austin m. (2) WILLIAM KILGORE, 15 October 1857, Walton Co. [Bk E:37].
1850 Mortality Schedule of the Walton Co. GA. Census shows James Austin, age 38, deceased, farmer, born GA, d. July 1849 of diptheria after being sick for four months. James Austin's estate records may also be found in Walton Co. Guardianship records on microfilm for the minors of James Austin, deceased, may be found in Walton Co., Returns P:306-308. Charles J. Sorrells, Mary, and Leonard Hayes were made their guardians.
Mary Sorrells Kilgore also has estate records in Walton Co. On 1 Nov. 1873, David Kilgore received his part of Mary Sorrells Austin Kilgore's estate in right of his wife, Seany Austin.William Kilgore's first wife was Elizabeth Thompson, and they had several children; also William and Mary Sorrells Austin Kilgore may have had children, but I'm not sure of them. 176 BENJAMIN C., b. ca. 1849, in 1850 and 1860 census.Children from 1850 Walton County census. There may have been other children. Children, if any, by William Kilgore are unknown to this compiler.
24. WILLIAM SNEAD 3 SORRELLS (Charles 2, Richard) probably was born just before the 1820 Madison County census) in which Charles Sorrells had two males under 10 years old, and two males 10/16 years old, and one male 16/26 years old. Since Charles had only four known sons up to 1820, the two males under 10 are thought to have been William Snead (birthdate unknown) and Russell Beasley Sorrells, born 1814 (22). The male who was 10/16 years must have been Charles James Sorrells, born 1807 (19). The male 16/26 years old must have been Richard W. Sorrells, born 1802 (15).
In the 1830 Walton Co. Census, Charles had one male 5/10 years old and one male 15/20 years old. The latter was probably Russell, and the former was probably William Snead, born just before the 1820 census, since he was in it. The compiler has therefore deduced the approximate birthdate for William Snead Sorrells, and it is not proven, since census is often incorrect for ages, and only heads of households were actually named in the 1820-40 censuses.
Great difficulty was encountered in sorting out the records of William
Snead Sorrells and William S. Sorrells (6),
son of William Alexander Sorrells. They were sons of brothers, and
both were named William S. Sorrells. Also in the records are other
men, named William Sorrells, all close relatives and descendants of the
two brothers, William Alexander and Charles Sorrells (1,
2). The full name of Charles'
son, William Snead, was given in
Our Kin :1068. The compiler has not found it as such
in any of the primary records searched. This name was probably given
to the authors when they interviewed descendants prior to publishing of
the book in 1958.
The William Snead name is also given by Mabel Yoakum Holliday Moody (125) in an old letter , and the name is thought to be correct by this compiler, for the son of Charles Sorrells. Charles' son, William S. Sorrells, married JANE TANNER, 3 March 1842, Walton County [BK D:112]. Most likely, he lived at home prior to his marriage and would not have appeared as a head of household in the 1830 or 1840 census.
On 27 August 1847, Charles Sorrells gave to William S. Sorrells, his son, a title bond for portions of Lot #47, 3rd District, Walton County, as stated by Charles in his will. On 10 March 1849, Charles wrote his will, saying, "my deceased son, William S. Sorrells, the widow of William S., Mrs. Jane Sorrells, and her little daughter, Rosa". Rosa is the only known child of this couple.
177 ROSA E. 4 b. 23 Nov. 1842, Walton Co; m. (1) WILLIAM G. 4 SORRELLS, son of Lucy Ann Haynes and James Nathaniel Sorrells (7, 60), on 10 July 1859, Walton Co. [Bk E:62]. She m. (2) JOSEPH T. BROWN (b. 31 Dec. 1838) on 1 Nov. 1865, Walton Co. GA. Children by William G. Sorrells are unknown. She and Joseph had the following children: ALPHONZA 5 (son), JOSEPH A., WILLIAM A, CHARLEY L., ROBERT L., BIRDIE (daughter).
25. JOHN BENJAMIN 3 SORRELLS (Charles 2, Richard ), the oldest son of Charles and his second wife, Sarah Rhodes (Rhoads), was born 4 July 1830, Walton County, and died 11 July 1920 [tombstone dates], Walton County. He wed JANE DULCENA TRIBBLE [b. 1 Jan. 1832; d. 3 July 1916, tombstone]. Both are buried in Sorrells Cemetery, five miles north of Monroe, Walton County. They married 1 February 1852, Walton County [Bk D:379].
John Benjamin Sorrells wrote a letter to Marion Dewoody Pettigrew, undated, but he did say he was 85 years old when he wrote it (ca. 1915). This letter was preserved in Sorrells and Allied Families, a manuscript she left in the Pine Bluff Arkansas library.
He wrote some puzzling statements. He said his grandmother was named Mildred Harris Sorrells, not Snead, as most descendants say it was. He said Richard Sorrells, his grandfather, died at age 45 in Madison County, Georgia. This does not match the 1744 birthdate for Richard that has passed down by family tradition, and we know Richard was alive in April 1800 when he made the purchase of land on Scull Shoal Creek in Elbert County.
He said Mildred Sorrells died in Walton County at the age of 90, surviving her husband many years. Family tradition gives her birthdate as 1746 and deathdate as 1836, so the age matches, but it is not known definitely where she died, after searching many Madison and Walton County records. Some descendants believe she died in Madison County and is buried there.
John Benjamin Sorrells wrote that the father of Elizabeth Jones Sorrells was William Jones. Her father was really Russell Jones (see 2). He also spoke of the two sets of children, nine of the first marriage of Charles, and five of the last set. There are ten children accounted for in Charles' will by his first marriage, and four children accounted for in Charles' will by his second marriage. It is not meant to discredit John's letter, as it is very important, but there are questions to be asked.
Before the Civil War, John was an extensive planter in Walton County. He served in Co. G (Walton Rangers), 10th Regt.Cav Ga.State Guards, and was detailed permanently by order of Adj.Gen.Wayne, 22 December 1863 [Wayfarers:674]. His son, Charles J. Sorrells (180), said he was a Lt. in the Confederate service in the Army of Tennessee, and with General Forrest's Cavalry participated in the Kentucky raid and was at the Battle of Stone River [Ansearching news, Vol. 14:68, Apr-June 1967]
John B. Sorrells is also said to have served in Co. D, 2d Regt. Ga. Cav. as 2nd Lt. from 1 May 1862-9 Jan. 1863 [Anita B. Sams, Ed. With Unabated Trust:228]. John's service records may be obtainable in the Civil War Records,Georgia Archives.
John B. Sorrells was elected Sheriff of Walton County,1864-65 and representative in the state legislature from Walton County, 1868-70, Ex. 1869, Ex. 1870 [Wayfarers: 512-514]. He was elected a member of the Constitutional Convention which framed the present constitution of the state of Georgia in 1865. Also serving were John W.Arnold and Henry McDaniel (future Governor of Georgia) of Walton County. While attending the Convention, they shared the same room [With Unabated Trust: 228].
John Benjamin Sorrells left a will, signed 1 August 1914, and recorded 2 August 1920 [Walton Co Will Bk A:376-77]. He named his wife, JANE, granddaughters, ANN 5 SORRELLS FUNK, Mrs. LENA DILLARD, Mrs. BESSIE PHILLIPS, and son, WILLIAM E. SORRELLS. John's home was designated as the lot on the east side of Madison Avenue in Monroe, Georgia
The Index to Walton County microfilm does not always differentiate between John B. Sorrells and his son, John B Sorrells, Jr. who died in 1896. There is a folder of loose papers at Georgia Archives pertaining to this family and John's original marriage license is there.
This family has been compiled from references given,1850-80 Walton County censuses, marriage records and tombstone records. For records on John B.Sorrells, deceased, consult the following: Direct Index To Estates, Walton County: Minutes 1893-98:249, 428, 431, 464, 449; L/A & Gdn, 1888. Appt. of Admr.; Adm. & Gdn. Sorrells, James Mathews, gdn. Apparently, most of these records belong to John Benjamin Sorrells, Jr.
178 SARAH 4, b. ca. 1853,; d. 1877; m. ROBERT AYCOCK (b. 1849; d. 1931), son of Martha Ann Snow and Robert T. Aycock [Wayfarers:762-63, sketch of Aycock family]. LENA DILLARD, granddaughter in John's will, was the daughter of this couple.

SORRELLS.. Charles J. Sorrells received his education at Johnson
Institute, Walton Co.
About 1878, he went to Texas, and in 1881 he became bookkeeper for Emman & Co., cotton factors, Brenham, Tx. After that, he superintended the office work for B.H. Sanders & Co. in Cleburne, and for 2 years was a very heavy purchaser. After that he was resident of Hillsboro, and in 1885 handled about 5000 bales.
"His paternal grandfather, Charles Sorrells, was a Georgian by birth and was a Colonel in the War of 1812. He was b. 1784; d. 1854. His ancestors were residents of Virginia during the early Colonial days" [Ansearching News, Vol. 14: 68. Apr-June 1967]. The birth date for Charles in Georgia is believed to be an error; we think he was born 1776 in Virginia.
